ANTS!!!

Yes, you read that correctly - ANTS!

The downside to the Minnesota Thaw. It is the time that the weather starts to get slightly warmer - read 30 degrees - and all of the little critters literally crawl out of the woodwork.

I am not certain on the point of infestation of the ants, but what I do know is that when I was at work yesterday, around lunch time, I reached for my lunch bag that I kept on the floor close to me, picked it up and almost dropped it. The front pocket was COVERED with ants!! My cookies were sacrificed for the cause and were dearly missed.

As I was trying to rid my bag of the picnic pests, paranoia set in. Where did they come from?! Did I kill them all? Are they on my other things? Are they in my drawers? Are they in my car? Are they multiplying rapidly in my kitchen pantry (where I stow my lunch bag upon my arrival home each night)? AHHHH! Who knew that something so little, and virtually harmless, could make a person nuts.

Thank goodness for ant spray. This stuff kills them with a vengeance! Love it! I think I get some sick pleasure out of killing bugs, spiders and creepy-crawlies. Not the actual killing them part, but the satisfaction afterwards of ridding my space of the creepy dudes. There have been a few large creepers that not even the biggest handfull of wadded-up kleenex or papertowels would get me to smoosh and kill those things. Gross.

Haha I just remembered, with the creepy crawlies coming out, Tucker will be on Red Alert. When he spots a bug on the wall or the ceiling, he will fixate on it and watch its every move. This usually results in us asking him what he's doing, and him ending up in some crazy, strange posture, sitting or laying positions where he can get a clear visual of his intruder. It is always good for a laugh, and possibly a photo- op. The second less likely.

If you are experiencing the same ant infestation, you have my sympathies.

Introverts and Extroverts

This weekend made me think long and hard about the different types of people there are out there. You have the introverts and the extroverts. Everyone can be funneled into either of the two categories with varying levels of, let's say, severity.

I consider myself, present day, to be an extrovert. I guess, you could call me a converted introvert. Growing up until the end of elementary school, I was on the end of "extreme introvert" spectrum. I was a pretty shy kid. In relating to people, to loud noises, my family and friends closest to me would confirm that 100% I was an introvert.

Moving on to junior high school and high school, I made more of a conscious effort to make friends and talk to people. I remember giving myself a sort of inner pep-talk of sorts before my first class began. I awkwardly introduced myself to a few people in class - two of whom would later become two of my best friends in junior high school (Thank you Amanda and Rachel!) The same thing happened in senior high school. In homeroom, I told myself,
"Self, you can DO this! Say hello, introduce yourself and ask what their names are."
I did that - and again, met one of my best friends in high school (take a bow Ms. Jenny L!).

I think a lot about life and life experiences is putting yourself out there. Now, I will be the first to admit that "putting yourself out there" doesn't exactly translate - for me - to just saying okay, and jumping out of a plane. For some, it is baby steps, others, it can be a moment of inner turmoil and inner coaching, and for others, it is almost as literal as jumping out of the plane.

That being said about myself, I can pretty much talk and carry on a conversation with just about anyone. Derick brought this up this weekend, and said,
"I haven't meet anyone who cannot carry on a conversation with you or who does not like you."

Now, that might not be quite true. I am positive that there are people out there who don't like me for one reason or another. I am sure that you could remember my story about Claire, and I imagine she for sure would be on that list.

Okay, I realize that I haven't really made a clear point yet, but stay with me, I am getting there.

This weekend I had trouble communicating and relating to someone. This was a very odd, uncomfortable and exhausting experience for me, to say the least. This person had no opinion, no ambition, no (real) manners, and frankly, no personality. I have never met someone so neutral that they were just "nothing" before. I don't think that they had any hearing problem at all, because they seemed to understand me. Now I know that probably sounds pretty harsh, but that is really the only way that I can describe my encounter with this person. I put myself out there, gave them every opportunity to choose things to do, choose movies to watch, asked open-ended questions about themselves and what they were up to, and at the most, I received one of the following responses:

shrugging shoulders
"I don't know"
or
a blank stare at me then at the floor/phone/laptop

Weird, right?! I guess I am not sure how to handle this for future encounters. This will most likely not be the last encounter and I am not sure how much of this I can handle without just wanting to avoid it and then appear heartless...? Have any of you ever experienced anyone like this before? I guess I am just at a loss right now.

Travel Planning

Tonight after work, I dug through the office closet on a mission. My mission? Suitcase Freedom. After we had moved into the house, we had shoved all of the suitcases deep into the closet in the office! It was a good thing - because, when have we really traveled and used them...umm...never! After about 20 minutes, I had freed my suitcase and started to jot down the things that would be going into said suitcase. It is going to be weird to pack for weather in the high 80s when the high around here has been 30 and snow...

I pulled out my flip flops and was like, hello old friends! I am excited just to wear those outside again! Yeehaw! I also grabbed my swimsuits with mixed feelings. On the upside, I am looking forward to getting some color on my pasty white bod, but then again...that means having to bare some of that pasty whiteness, which I have plenty of, and let's face it, I have been working out as much as a hibernating black bear. Ugg.

It was weird to pull out tank tops with the thought of just wearing them and jeans too...no multiple layers! I checked the weather again and it was in the high 80s this week. Whew! I may just sizzle when I get off the plane! I did step into Eddie Bauer for the first time and made a purchase! I found a couple cool things that I plan on bringing down with me! My mind is filling up my suitcase as I type this...It almost makes me want to stop and finish jotting down the list, but how much can you really prep-pack without actually throwing the things in there?! Wow I am really out of packing practice! I did buy sunscreen! At least I hope not to turn into a lobster!!

Well, before I leave on my mini vacay, I need to work this weekend and also find a ride to the airport! The list of potential rides is getting more and more obscure...as it usually tends to when trying to find someone with a time slot open from about noon to 1:30pm or so, depending on who it is giving me the ride and how much driving is involved. I am going to be calling more people this weekend for that direct purpose.

Okay, I am officially mentally moved on to making that list, so I will write more later!

Growing Up So White and Nerdy

I was reading a blog that I follow, and that, paired with the recent attention of the bullying video, it got me thinking back to my childhood - growing up and going through grade school.

There are a few moments that I remember crystal clear, as if I was able to think of them and then project them on the side of the building for the world to see.

As the blog I was reading touched on was the fact that a couple of her friend groups "broke up" with her. I remember back to I think it must have been fourth or fifth grade, but there was this one girl, Claire. We became friends, had some things in common, and had hung out a couple times after school and I even spent the night at her house one time. Well, as the story goes, my mom noticed an "unpleasant change" in the way I was acting at home and she told me that I should not be hanging out with Claire anymore. The next day at recess, I had to "break-up" with her. How do you do that and not look and feel like a complete a-hole?! I tried as nice as I could to tell her that we could not hang out anymore, but she just didn't seem to get it. Then I had to pull out the big guns - "Claire, we can't be friends anymore." Then I pretty much walked away to the other side of the playground. I felt awful because she seriously looked like I had run over her dalmatian (which she actually had and that I thought was so cool!).

A few years before that, my mom came in to school to give a small presentation to my classmates about diabetes and to discuss that I had it. I didn't know it at the time, but this would prevent me from having friends for the next few years. Thanks for the childhood trauma mom... After the presentation, it was time for recess. The kids whom I normally played with were nowhere to be found. When I did find them - on top of the monkey bars, they said that they did not want to play with me anymore because they didn't want to catch diabetes. I was mad and heartbroken in the same instant. Thus began my long-term stint as "the loner." I started walking around by myself during recess, which led me to then walking with the playground Para. She was one of the nicest ladies I had ever met - still to this day it holds true. After a few weeks of walking around the playground with her, I decided to just hang out on the blacktop square close to the doors where we would line up and get let back inside, I mean, what was the point of walking around pretty much by yourself? As I hung out on the blacktop, I watched a few of my grademates playing basketball. One of the tallest kids in our class, Tyler, and his friend, Rob. I often just watched in silence, but then sometimes got brave and said some things to them - or, heaven forbid, have to throw the basketball back to them if it bounded in my direction. I think they just tolerated me, which I appreciated.  But then, I began talking with them more and more and still even talk with Rob occasionally. Funny how some things can stay connected through so long!

A little while after this loner phase, I became closer friends with Gina and Stacey. They were so different from the kids that I usually hung out with. The three of us usually hung out in the cable ride pit looking through the rocks for agates. I remember coming home from school one afternoon and my mom took one look at my matching pink pants and t-shirt and asked, "What were you doing today?! Your pants are SO dirty!" I just laughed and told her about my new found friends and our "treasures" we found in the rock pit. It was Gina and Stacey who made me drum up the courage to ride the cable ride for the first time. I was not anything close to a risk-taker when I was young. Nope. Not a bit. Gina and Stacey also influenced my wardrobe. They wore what was deemed the "skater" clothes - a solid black zip-up hooded sweatshirt, and the big, skater shoes.

Fast Forward to Junior High School. This was my true run-in with a bully of my own. It was in art class - funny how a class and subject that I love so much could be tainted by such an evil person. His name was Greg. He sat at our table of four people. There was me, Greg on my right, Russ (a very popular boy) across from me, and another girl next to him. Greg said mean things to me every day in class. It became a dread to me to go into that class, and I would pray that he would not be in class each day. No such luck. He was there. Every day. There was one day that was the absolute worst day. I am not sure what exactly was different about this day of all days, but we were working on a project and he said some mean things to me. I remember him telling me that I looked like a Cabbage Patch Doll and had a really big head and a stupid haircut (which now, you're just like, really? That wasn't so bad) and there were other things said too. The different thing about this day is that he did not stop. He kept going on and on and on and on and it really got to me. I almost started crying, when Russ, who had been silent up until this moment, spoke up for me and told Greg to leave me alone. Greg stopped talking for the rest of the hour, and looked over at me, I think he realized a little of the impact his words had hurt me. But, he smirked anyway. I remember talking about it to a couple friends and I think even my mom. My friends said that he was just a huge jerk and to not listen to him. My mom, on the other hand, was convinced that he was treating me so meanly because he really liked me (hmm, didn't fall for that one mom!) Anyway, I had been so relieved that Russ had stood up to him and said something, that I wanted to thank him after class, but I was so embarrassed, and how could I talk to a "cool" kid? I think I tried and tried over the next few years - into high school and after - to thank him and to let him know that he had made a difference. Now I can't remember if I ever went through with it or not. I might have to see if I can find out if I did or not. I really would like to say something some time because I think those are the types of things that need to be said.

Okay, so there you have a long account of things that happened to me as a kid - a loner, a nerd, and bullied by a mean boy. I have been through some things, but of course, as the cheesy line goes, All of what has happened in the past has helped shape who I am today. True that cheesy phrase, true that.

Professional Graphic Design Blunders

The other day, Derick was flipping through the Easter "ad" for Target and was looking intently at a couple of the pictures. Thinking that it was something he was interested in, I asked him what he was looking at. His answer surprised me! He was looking at the following two pictures:

The first image of the boy "shooting the basketball" made me just about fall off my chair!
The Graphic Designer must have not been watching what they were doing. The poor little boy in that ad looks like he is going to severely hurt himself by straddling the pole holding up the hoop, or shooting the ball and the ball hitting the bottom edge of the backboard and come crashing right back down on him again. Not to mention that the scale of the boy in proportion to the basketball hoop is way off.

The second image is of a boy flying a kite. This was the second image that Derick stopped to look at, hold up to me and ask, "This boy isn't even flying the kite, is he?!' I looked a little closer, and there again, the scale is off, although a bit better than the poor basketball boy.

In other news - after today, I am down to single digits of days left on my vacation count-down! I am so excited to get away for awhile and see my good friend. I think that this vacation will actually force me to relax for a number of reasons. For one, I will be many states away from home, I am staying with my friend, so I will not have many of my things to entertain me or remind me they need doing, yes dust bunnies, I see you scoffing in the corner. Also, the mentality of my friend - is very laid-back and chill. Something I really need right now amidst the chaos in my work life! And finally, I will be going to Texas - pretty much a given that the easy-going, laid back Texan way of living will rub off on me. If anyone is interested, the weather for the past week has been in the mid 80s for the high and lows of mid to high 50s. I think I can live with that!!

Don't get me wrong, There is still a list of things I have put together that I would maybe like to see/try/experience. One of the ones I am most looking forward to is the Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin, Texas. I am really looking forward to taking lots and lots of pictures there and just walking around all of the colors and shapes of the flowers and structures!

I am sure that I will also get to experience some of the nightlife and possibly a museum or two as well. I am open to whatever, and some of the time, I am sure I will be content just to lie around outside - maybe by a pool with my books! I plan on bringing a small library with me to keep me occupied while my friend is at work for some of the time during the days I am there. Cookie baking has also crossed my mind...I am sure that will happen as well! So excited!

Spring is "Springing-Up"

With the taunts of spring, come the full in-store point-of-purchase displays for flower seeds, potting soil, vegetable seeds and the array of other various gardening gadgets and wonders. Lowe's Lawn & Garden section has been a must-browse section ever since mid February when their gardening supplies were re-introduced. Yep - "plant" me in that area and I can occupy myself (and maybe a cart-full) of some of that gardening goodness.

Well, I did get myself some seed packets this year. For flowers, I chose: Morning Glories, Cosmos, Snapdragons and Zinnias.

I also decided to try an indoor herb garden with: Lavender, Cilantro, Basil and Oregano.

I will also have a windowsill planter with leaf lettuce again this year, but, from past learnings, that will ALSO be kept inside. (darn ROBINS!) I am, also going to try green peppers this year mmm...

As I snapped these pics quick, I thought I should let you in on my little - ok, maybe not so little - plant hobby I have...
Upstairs in the loft, getting plenty of sunshine!

On the windowsill in our bedroom.

The Peace Lily from my Grandpa's funeral and the Orchid downstairs in the Fish Room - yes, it's real!

Our "Green Bay Packers" Plant on the kitchen table

the seeds turned to seedlings for my flowers, coming in nicely!

Now we move outside, where I hauled out some of the things you see below, since the weekend weather has been in the 50s!

This is a plant screen I got on clearance last year (I think) - I just set some pots in it to show how it works. Tucker is in there checking out the pots on the ground. He likes that it is spring time too!

this is the 1/2 wall in front of our porch - another flower box will go next to this one shown. I have yet to plant anything in here - it's only March in MN here people!

So, that pretty much sums up my plant state at the moment. I am excited to post more photos when the flowers come up and show their colors - and when I have some peppers and herbs to show! I have been having fun getting down and dirty in the potting soil and prepping pots and plants and seeds for the new spring and summer seasons to come!

Think Spring!

"Real"ity TV

Hmm.

You know how you can be completely OBSESSED with a TV show when the current season is on, but then once the season ends, it falls completely off your TV radar?! I was just thinking about all of the TV shows that I watch over the course of a week. I actually made a list...

Mondays
7pm How I Met Your Mother
7pm The Bachelor (which trumped HIMYM most Monday nights) Over until the next season with Ashley H from this season's the Bachelor as the new Bachelorette!

Tuesdays
7pm Glee
8pm Raising Hope (did not always watch, but it was entertaining when I did catch it)
9pm Parenthood (Usually caught-up with this one on Hulu Plus after it was on)

Wednesdays
8pm Modern Family

Thurdays
7pm Big Bang Theory
7pm Community (also would watch this online after the fact)
8pm The Office
9pm Outsourced

But at one point, there were two other shows included in this list - Project Runway and Top Chef.
Project Runway has pretty much fallen off the radar of the majority of people...I am not sure they are even done casting for the next season (season 9) of this show yet! And Top Chef - they just kept running season to season, almost back-to-back and I lost track, and frankly, lost interest! I guess it didn't help that they kept picking people there for awhile who I HATED. I am talking to YOU Marcel Vigneron, Hung Huynh, Michael Voltaggio andKevin Sbraga!(ok, I didn't mind the last one so much, but I just thought that someone else should have
won over him)

I think the attitudes and the mannerisms of the "winners" of these shows also need to be taken into
consideration. I know, I know, I am diving into some Pandora's Box territory here, but come on, you
were all thinking it when that contestant you did not like won the end of the show - any show not just
Top Chef!

Not to mention a few of the Project Runway contestants that I was less than thrilled at the TV for
"winning:"
Irina Shabayeva (CANNOT believe that she won. The horror)
Gretchen Jones (CANNOT believe that she won. I was so angry-gag)

*deep breath* Okay, so I guess that was more in the moment of being angry at the contestants,
but that isn't really what this blog post was about -  getting back on track, this was about how the
TV shows that you start watching, fall off the radar and then you have to somehow pick them back up
again just before the next season begins.

Now, for some, this is easy - if you watch a lot of TV. In actuality, Derick and I bumped back down
to basic cable, so we often have to Hulu our shows that we have missed.I don't really consider myself
to watch a lot of TV - because, even that list way up at the top of shows that I "watch" has some listed,
chances are that I only have time/make time to watch a few of them a week on any given week. After
missing the shows for awhile (like Parenthood, I noticed last night), I TV show binge, watching three or
four episodes at one time - I like watching this way better - the show makes more sense and you don't
usually miss some of the important stuff from show to show, and you don't have to wait a week between
watching shows!

In the Champagne Room

First of all, this blog is not about sex in the Champagne Room.

Rather, it is about making my Pink Champagne Cupcakes for Kim's 50th birthday party tomorrow!

Yes, there is actual Champagne in the cupcakes and the frosting! Mmm! Champagne is my favorite! I actually had to look up the best way to pop a bottle of bubbly since, to my knowledge, I had not opened a bottle of Champagne before! I was glad that I looked it up - the directions I found suggested holding a towel over the bottle's top as you remove the cork. Good thinking! The cork would have flown across the room without the towel present and with all of the bubbles - some of it flowed out of the bottle! So, now I know how to uncork Champagne like a champ!

The cupcakes are baked, frosted, decorated and boxed, awaiting their trip to Eden Prairie for the birthday bash tomorrow! It will be a fun afternoon! I am looking forward to it!

After this commission, next up will be Halleigh's 2nd birthday cupcakes - Elmo! I may have to practice more with the frosting tip. I tried using the tip with firm frosting and it was pretty difficult - so there is room for some exploration!

Well, that's about it, just a cupcake update for the most part tonight!
I need to work on branding my cupcake creations...stay tuned!

The Bachelor

I know, I know...I am sure that many of you who know me are appalled that I have fallen into the "trap" of watching this "reality" show - the Bachelor. Well, you can blame one or more of my coworkers for that one! It is really like watching a bad train accident - it is messy, confusing, weird, but yet you cannot help yourself from watching.

Anyway, last night was the Bachelor Women Tell All. It was interesting, and a little disappointing. The most controversial, talked about woman on the show, Michelle, came off as the poor innocent victim, and most everyone was trying to protect and console her. Pssh. I really liked Jackie's description of her, "Michelle, you're like a spider. You're creepy and everyone's scared of you!" haha ZING! When Michelle was brought up to the "hot seat," a few of the girls really let her have it - and I think, good for them. On the show, Michelle has come across as a very selfish, evil, controlling person. She said a lot of mean, hurtful things about a lot of the girls and acted very badly the majority of the time. There are clips from the show that were shown where she just looked downright evil-possessed. Creeper. I was glad that the ladies that spoke up said what they had to say. For the most part, I think that what they said was true, but the way that they said it was pretty direct. All in all, it made for some interesting TV, and for all of us who did not enjoy Michelle on the show - we were all silently cheering "yes!" I can still remember the Valentine's Day episode - the BEST episode - when Michelle was booted off the show. About fricken' time, I remember thinking!

The show was 2 hours, as it normally is on Monday nights (a "commitment," as one of my coworkers stated- and she was right!). I thought it was a little long, and they did not talk to some of the later girls, like Shawntel (the funeral director and mortician). She had not said much throughout the entire show, and I felt sad for her. One thing that I did find really funny was the "bloopers" that they showed about filming the show - anything from a pot of sticks falling over behind where the women were seated for a shot, a naked man walking in the background on a beach area in South Africa to elephants getting busy on Emily and Brads date in South Africa! Those were some serious LOL moments!

One thing that is really funny about Tuesday mornings at work, are the comments and questions you can hear sprinkled throughout the building about last night's episode! This morning, my coworker and I were talking about it, and someone else from the department walked by and asked if we were talking about the Bachelor, and then joined in with her take on what had happened. I think I can speak for the group of us when I say that we will all be waiting on the edges of our couches for the ending of next Monday's show! He is going to propose (supposedly) to his gal he chooses to be his wife! Exciting! Most everyone that I have talked to is rooting for Emily. I really, really like her too, but also like his other option, Chantal. From the looks of the previews of next week, it looks like the bachelor gets frustrated with his situation with both ladies and considers walking away - for the second time doing the Bachelor show. This is the first season that I have watched more than one show, and I have to say, it is pretty interesting what happens...I think I watched one episode of one of the Bachelorette shows, but this was the only one that I was "told" to watch - and followed up with.

Anyway, as much as I liked watching the show, I am glad that there is going to be a break now for awhile. Also, At the end of the month I am going to visit a friend, and he already said that I "cannot" watch that show while staying with him. Haha - I still get to see the show come to an end. I would have found a way, one way or another.
